Default Interior paint,What can I use?

Looking to paint the center console plate on my sons 80 vette. Color is black. What is a good paint that will match OEM paint. Is there something that I could buy off the shelf at a locak home center like lowes or home depot?

Any good brand of semi-flat or satin black paint will get the job done. Krylon, SEM Trim Paint, John Deere Blitz Black, etc. You need to strip the existing paint from the part (chemical strip is easiest, IMO), wash/rinse/dry it completely. Some folks mask the lettering and raised edges; most just use an X-Acto knife to peel the unhardened paint from the areas that are to stay chrome within 10 minutes or so after shooting the paint. Don't get fingers on any freshly painted areas, and don't try to brush off any 'cuttings' when you peel the trim. Just let it dry, then brush them off.

It's black plastic. May not have been painted from the factory (ashtray door is painted; it's metal). You can use almost anything to paint it, but there isn't anything which will bring the chrome trim back to life.

If you want to purchase a reproduction, you might have better results.

Sorry. Thought the plate would be metal like earlier models. If it's plastic, you should use SEM satin black vinyl dye (SEM Colorcoat).

Chrome (vacuum plated) edging/letters are tougher. Michael's craft stores have some gold and silver paint pens that look pretty good and should last for some time. They would be easy to use for doing edging/letters on that plate. I don't think much of sticking foil tape down on plastic; doubt if it will last very long.

Spray vinyl dye? I will have to order that. I live in the middle of nowhere. Ive used silver and chrome model paint and applied it using a toothpick in the pass for the edge.

I don't think that 'regular' spray paint would hold very well on plastic. Krylon makes a paint for plastics. You might check that out.

Yes, it is called Krylon Fusion. Covers nicely and is durable.

These Weatherboots were black when I bought them.

I would not use a dye on hard plastic.

Why not? It's made to bond with any plastic.

The SEM "dye" goes on "like" a paint....worked GREAT on my hard plastic parts as well as the flexible parts...no problems yet...

Mistake. Use it, it works like paint, matches to all interior colors, dries fast and lasts forever.
