Has anyone tried one of these rebuilt Rochester from Ecklers? I have been running a couple of different aftermarket carbs and want to get back to the Quadra jet. The one that came with my car (not running at the time) has been bubba-fied beyond belief. I am not much of a carb guy but the little that I do know says the one I have is a mess. Although when I got it I could tell the gaskets are new and the body had been painted I notice that the internal choke rod is missing the secondary rod is in correct. I was looking for the ID number to look up the cost of the parts online and could not find it anywhere on the carb body. I discovered that the numbers have been ground off. So if I can tell that from the outside who knows what has been done to the inside.
The internal choke link can be a pain to reconnect sometimes.
I would NOT buy an out of the box carb from any vendor, I'd do my best to hunt down a core. If you can find an edelbrock QJet on eBay you'd probably be better off, as those likely haven't been tampered with too much. The fact that the casting numbers have been filed off is a bit scary on yours, but it wouldn't hurt to open it up and see what's going on.
Otherwise, I'd just try to find a pretty correct carb on eBay.
Hey Shark,
I have considered looking for a used QJet and having it rebuilt/recondictioned from what I have seen the total cost is consideribly more than some offered already recondtioned. Can I asked what is the drawback of the "Out of the box" carbs?
You might want to take a look at National Carbs for price and warranty. I have used them several times and they worked fine, along with if there is a problem they are responsive. This route along with Ecklets will save some $$ over buying a core and having a performance rebuilder work it over.

I've had several of those "rebuilt" carbs from Ecklers and other "reputable" sources sent to me for repair: Chances are good, it's not going to be any less Bubbafied than what you have now. The nice thing about those commercially rebuilt carbs is that there are sometimes a few usable parts on them to make them marginally suitable as parts carbs.
There are a lot of good used carbs being sold on eBay and CraigsList - I have customers pick them up and send them to me very often. There are also a few junk ones being sold, so you have to be careful. Your best bet is to pick up an original used carb in good condition and rebuilding it. You can drop me an e-mail for my "Used Carb Screening Service" and for my Services Info sheet for options on how to find a good carb.
i don't know about grinding off the numbers, that pic looks like gold paint over a never stamped body, which may mean a service replacement. Don't know of any reason to shave off the numbers. There should be other numbers to look for.

.. one should see grinding marks?
It's hard to see in the photo but it looks ground off and the wall is thinner on that side a well.
If you were closer I'd volunteer to go over the carb for you to tell you how effed up it is...
Thanks Shark
I will open it up over the next few days and post a few photos. Lars sent me his papers and I will start the search for a unmolested QJet over the next few weeks.
Here is a photo of the ground off ID number. The bad part is I do not even have a good core now.
Could that be a early carb with the round foil tag to the left of the "ROCH Q-JET". There should be a circle about the size of a penny if it is. I don't think they had the normal stamping on the round tag models.

My 63 Buick had one of those tags. I may be wrong but this really looks like its ground/sanded off. Are there any other markings that might help me ID this one?
