Default 69 oil gauge issue help

Hi there

i have a 69 350 and the gauge has always read high when on the highway its sit's all the way over the right,
and when i am stopped at lights it sit's in the middle.
when the engine is off i can see oil in the line but it's patchy.
i loosened the brass coupling at the rear of the gauge and started the car when the oil started coming out i tightened it up,
this didn't help.
do i need a new gauge?
see attached photos

cheers
lou

Lou - I saw a tech paper on Willcox website on how to rejuvenate the oil pressure gauge on a 69.

Your gauge is probably gunked up inside.

Here you go!

First: The oil line will not be fully charged with oil unless you fill the line before you install it to the gauge. Also, having air in the line makes no difference as it just pressurizes to the same level as the oil. In fact, some air in the line will act as a mini-accumulator--dampening any pulsations in the oil system.

Second: Either someone has installed a higher rate regulator spring in the oil pump or a higher pressure pump. It should cause you no problem except for using a little more fuel for the added work it is doing.

I see no symptoms in your original post that would indicate any problem whatsoever with the gauge. Rebuild/replace it if you want; but another gauge will almost surely do the same thing.

I went to the Willcox link. The gauge now works, but I bent/broke the needle. Can this be repaired?
