Hi Jimmy,
I believe the springs origionally had a light gray coating on them that was similar to paint... maybe called (lin-o-coat?).
There are various venders who sell a light gray paint for the spring, or you could try your hardware store.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for the good advise. Now I need to make a trip to a hardware store to see
how close I can come to the right shade.
It will not be a show car but it has only 25k on it and I would like to keep the
underside as clean and fresh as I can.
Again, help is always available here, great bunch of people!

I also ended up using dove gray. It was a close match.

The standard spring leaves are light gray. The liners are painted light gray.

If you have the FE7 then the liners are black plastic and not painted. And the spring leaves painted light gray.

If you want more correctness the spring attachment plate is semi-gloss black.

Default Spring Color

Best I have found is Cold Galvanizing spray paint. It is about perfect and is very high in zinc as was the original paint to assist with lubricity.

Hi Karol,
The painted liners you mention.... is that something that happened in the later 70s?
I'm pretty sure that the 68-73+ springs didn't have painted liners on either the standard or F41 spring.

Alan

Alan, don't know about other years but this information is out of the 78-79 NCRS tech manual & judging guide.

I believe the springs on later cars were painted after assembly whereas the leaves were painted individually on earlier cars. Don't know when the changeover in process occurred.
