Ok guys I am in kinda of a pickle here......LOL I am by no means just a pencil pusher here and have worked on motors quite a bit but audio systems are not my cup of tea so to speak. My problem is this I went to Best Buy yesterday to check on an aftermarket radio, and spoke to the YOUNG guy and of course he was like yeaaa no problem 65 bucks plus the cost of the radio. I am not sure I want this YOUNG guy gutting my radio out....lol The vette already has an aftermarket radio in it so it is not the original radio ...QUESTION is just how hard would it be to take the aftermarket radio out and replace it with another 1??
Should be, but probably won't be. Before anything else, determine what the previous owner left you and how he/she completed the install. Have you peeked behind the dash yet?
It all depends on how much disassembly is needed to get at the unit. As far as the hook-up goes, it's no big deal. The instructions that come with the new unit should allow him...or you...to connect everything with no problem. If he/you only need to remove the trans tunnel side covers to make the swap, piece-of-cake. If not, he better know what he's doing.
You don't mention what year vette, most of the vendors on here sell after market radios that will fit in your dash. I would check them first. As far as the install, it's not that hard the instructions that come with the radios are pretty straight forward. Good luck
ohh ok guys thats kinda what i am feeling like ...I mean as far as me doing it myself....the year model is a 79 model...and no Mike I have not peeked yet...prob would be a good idea to do so
yea mike the way the guy talked at Best Buy is that it should already have the wiring harness in there that I need ....just dont like the idea of him having to drive my vette into the bay and due to insurance reasons i cant stand there and watch but from afar

I am glad you are doing it yourself. Even if you don't have any idea what you are doing, you are probably about as qualified as the guys I have met at Best Buy. Just ask questions here and work you way through it.
The dreaded previous owner of my '79 left behind a mangled mas of butchered and taped wires behind the sound system. I ended up using only the ground, constant and accessory wiring. Since I added two outboard amps, I used new RCA connectors and new speaker wire and a new power antenna. Looking at what was left, I would not have used any of the original speaker wires - just too hacked up.
BTW, some workers at Best Buy are Okay and some aren't. I'd ask for some evidence that they know what they're doing. Maybe take it to Car Toys or another specialty shop if you're going to farm it out.
