I actually have had the same idea for my 72. I created a thread and even contacted Josh and Custom Image Corvettes to see if he can recreate Curby's. Here is the thread I started:
I will only provide some feedback from the perspective of an owner of a 1968 C3 (many years ago):
The only thing that I REALLY, REALLY didn't like on the '68 was the fact that it DID NOT HAVE FLARES at the rear of each wheel opening. I spent an enormous amount of time cleaning, filling, and repainting the chips/nicks/pits that would occur, just from normal driving on paved streets! And, driving on a gravel road was absolutely out of the question...even at slow speeds.
So, cut the flares off, if you want...but you'll be sorry that you did in very short order.

It's really that bad, is it? I do in fact drive on a lot of questionable roads...
The gill panel really looks like the best option at this stage. I can't wait until Custom Image starts making them.
(who will want to buy a '71 modified to look like a '69?)
If the price was right it wouldn't make a difference to me. I prefer the 68/69 over the 70-72 so I'd pay more for a 71 modified to look like a 69 than a 71 that looks like a 71 and I'd bet money that a lot of people feel the same way.
