So thats how it goes. Thank you for that. From what I can remember from hanging the tray this afternoon, it seems like the push button is nowhere near the back of that ledge. Does that tab protrude out towards it?
No.... I just put mine back in yesterday. The tab is secured to the underside of the deck with screws, and it hangs straight down. It should be fairly centered. It also looks like there`s a backing plate maybe for the mounting screws to bite into.
Looks like I will have to get creative and make a tab and then glass it to the bottom of the deck, because where it mounts on the 77, the screws would come through to the outside of the car just behind the window.

Hi,
The 71 tray latch is very different.
The spring steel latch is bolted to a nut plate riveted in place to the fiberglass under the rear window. I believe on real cars the spring steel is black.
The latch catches the ss edge of the tray when you bring the door up and use the handle on the latch to bend it.
Regards,
Alan
Thanks Alan, What it looks like to me is the peice the latch attaches to on correct cars runs flat under the window. I am thinking by the time 77 rolled along its been changed, because mine is tilted down. I think the latch would never meet the catch. Its close to 4 inches from where it has to mate. Could be wrong, but I think its different. Just glad the provisions were still there for the glass frame.
I'm always amazed at how the design progression moves along from year to year.
The push button latch was on drawing board, the area for it is there in the door, but something wasn't ready yet and they continued along with the older style latch for another year
Just had a quick look and the hanger is attached under the rear deck vent channel so the reinforcement was laid inside that "trough"
If I remember correctly 77 was the first year without those vents and therefor...no trough for the reinforcement to go into.
Make sure when the door is all the way up, the latch isn't angled in such a way to the hanger that it want's to slip out. With mine, it looks like it's basically flat or maybe even hooked down a little (you need to push the door up slightly to get it to let go.)
Since your door will be going up higher, the latch will be pointing slightly up.
Maybe you could file/cut a notch across the latch face to engage the hanger to prevent it from dropping UN-expectedly
Or maybe it won't matter
Yup you are right. No trough to fasten it to. Glassed it to the upper panel and it works great. Just have to clean it up and its finished. Thanks to all.
