Default 76 steering column

I am attempting to assemble the column after installing a new key switch.
When I compress the lock plate the shaft wants to pull out so I can not get the compressor to move down on the threaded rod putting enough force on the plate.

IF you're working on a telescopic column, you need to install a bolt to lock the upper shaft.

Actually installing an allen set screw works great for me. It allows the set screw to thread down into the shaft and hold down the pin with tension...and still allows the lock plate suppressor to be threaded on the shaft easily.

You need a 5/16-18 UNC set screw or a #20 allen screw to lock the upper shaft.

This tool works great, the center bolt screws into the shaft and locks the telescope and also depresses the lock plate.
