Ok with all this shifter ball discussion, I've decided to install a Hurst T handle.
What year did they start installing hurst shifters again
Just cop humor.
Mine is a June '68 build and it is orig. interior.
I have a med. weighted all silver chrome screw on ball.
I even have the 2 piece reverse lever springs still in the shifter tube.
Oh no, I started a spring discussion
I'm glad we got to the bottom of this.
The year is almost over.
Happy New Year

ok Marshal...now you are throwing this to a whole new dimension. "medium weight"??
Go weigh your ball (shifter). does it have brass threads inside??
Gentlemen, the 1968`s are chrome and I don't know anything about 69`s .....A main problem is that there are very few one owners left and that also remained original....most have been sold several times over and who knows what parts have been replaced on those cars....Mine is #13092 with 28,000 miles and with weekends of 500+ miles at a time on sking trips between Dearborn and Boyne Mountain included.....
The sill plate is also visible on my post #16 above....that too is original ....now what the hell is this about......very few parts on mine were changed and only to suit my personal interest....and shifter ***** and sill plates were not one of them......
and the car has not been plated since 1973....when the gas first started to get crazy in price from the Arab War
.

IC, a few very early 68's had a wider sill plate. Owners must have complained because it was changed to be about 1/2" more narrow. A good friend has owned 2 or 3 low digit Sept 67 cars and all were the same.
My Dobbins' shows black only for 69s. Bizzoco has a pic of what appears to be a chrome **** in a 69 from #26182. The same pic appears twice. It is possible the **** is black chrome and caught the camera flash when the pic was taken.

Mike, my Bizzocco book is falling apart from "overuse" and I need to put it in a binder, but did you see anywhere in that book where he talks specifically about the shifter? I see pictures here and there and I agree, I saw the one that looks chromeish, but that may be the flash I looked in the index and it said ( i think) page 159 but I didn't see anything there. I'd be surprised if it not somewhere considering he spends a page talking about hazard light switches. Thanks, john
The only thing i can think is that maybe the black wears off and looks like chrome after that,or there was 2 type ***** chrome and black. My ball does not have a hint of black on it.

What was the 70 shifter ball?? Was it Chrome or Black? If they went back to chrome in 70, and your car is real late, that could be the reason as 69 production went so long. Who knows. When was your car built?
PS, I am not sure on the 70 ball. I am "off call" as of 0500 hrs this morning and now taking a week off! Headed to the Jersey Shore...my brother in law dared me to go surfing. Pics of the dare will be forthcoming.
As I stated above, AFAIK all '69-72 4-speed shift ***** were black-chrome plated. To the eye, they appear to be a light pewter color, but are just as glossy as the bright chrome shift *****....just not as reflective.
I find that darker color shift **** to be a rather odd thing for GM to do; the C2 cars all had bright chrome [manual] shifter *****, I believe.
