I have the same problem with my 76. I just decided to sit up higher and let the top of the windshield block the sun or wear a cap lower. However it's probably an easy fix.
...The sun visors on my '76 seem to be stuck in the up position, they won't move. Does anyone know the reason for this and/or how I can fix it?...
Age and moisture. The visors mount on two chrome rods and can take a set when not moved.
If you cannot gently force them down, you may want to consider removing them and getting a little penetrating oil on each rod. Go easy on the oil. The AIM says the visors should take 7-15 lbs of effort to move.

I was unloading my car from a trailer when I first bought it and was looking right into the sun. I instinktively yanked the drivers one down. Now it won't go back up without removing the unit and rotating the chrome bar all thew way around.
Just remove them via the screws and then you could pull out those chrome pins. They are probably just rusty or frozen in place. A clean up job should do it with some grease.
