Default Question on VIN #'S

On our vin # are they for ALL GM vehicles or just for vette's? I'm just trying to figure out how far ahead of the 500,000 vette my came to. I know the half million vette vin was 1Z37X7S426583. So if there was a vin the same with only the last digit a 2. Would that be a vette also or could it have been a monza?

It would have been a vette also. This vin series is only for Corvettes.

26583 is the consecutive unit number. Most of the time, Corvettes came off the line in sequence, but there could be exceptions. 26582 should have been before 26583; 26584 should have come after.

Subtract your consecutive unit number from 26583 or 26583 from your number and you'll be in the ball park.

The 500,000th was completed on Tuesday, March 15, 1977. What's your time/built date on your trim tag?

This site has a very nice breakdown of the Vette VIN codes.

"Actually and for the record, the car was produced on the previous Friday, March 11th. It was cleaned up and the number "500,000" lettered across the windshield during the weekend, then run down the final line again on Monday for photographers." Found this in the 1978 "CORVETTE" An American Classic book. That's what had me thinking about this question. Find all kinds of stuff.

The 13 digit VIN's used by GM prior to 1981, are brand and model specific.

The first digit indicates the brand, "1" being Chevrolet, "2" was Pontiac, and so on.

The second digit was the model. "Z" indicated a Corvette. I don't recall what a Monza was, but Camaros were an "S" and Impalas an "L".

The next 11 digits could possibly be the same, on other Chevrolet models, but only a Corvette could start with a VIN with a "1Z".

Even then, the seventh character is 'S' for vehicles assembled at the St. Louis plant. Not sure what else St. Louis built in 1977 other than trucks.

You seems to have come up with a different VIN this time as compared to last.

I thought I asked the question before. But it's been close to two years. I didn't come up with the vin then.
