Some guys don't think 'Stingray' means much on the side of a C3. Some do. I'm in the latter camp. Good to see the C7 reclaim the honor. It seems the badge has meaning after all.
I can see the family resemblance. Not a huge fan of the tail end, though has grown a little on me. There is 99% chance I wouldn't be able to afford one anytime soon, so I doubt GM really cares about my opinion on it anyway.
I know that when the designer of the Stingray,Bill Mitchell, retired, the name "Stingray" was retired also, and that was in 1977, so in '77, the Stingray went missing on the side of the 'Vette. What reason did GM give f/ coming back w/ the Stingray name? Must be a reason, yes?
I don't know, this is the first day I've heard about this. I thought the Stingray left us in '77 when Mitchell retired. I know the first year was '63, also the year of the "split window." Those were the days...the '60s, and thru '71.
A question... did GM retire the "Stingray" name with Mitchell or was it just a coincidence? I don't know the background behind the dropping of the label.
I'm trying really hard to like the C7, but it's not there for me. I guess it's meant for a new generation of Corvette owner. I like my "Shark" and there's no way GM can attach that sticker to the C7.

Watch the videos on the C7 thread.
I really like this car, I think it will do well.
Apparently I didn't look hard enough for an existing thread. Sorry guys
My Corvette is a 1976 model. It needs all the help it can get in the legend department. Being an official 'Stingray' can't hurt. I (sort of) understand why some guys don't care for the label being brought back, but to others reviving the name brings back some continuity to the Corvette's history. It also indicates the badge does have special meaning to GM. It's not just a shiny bauble stuck on the fender. Here's an excerpt from an article at windingroad.com
"There are very, very few vehicles that, upon their debut make the entire automotive world stop and take notice. The Chevrolet Corvette is one of them. Actually, excuse us, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is one of them. That’s right, for the first time since 1976, the Corvette is wearing the Stingray badge.."
The transformers concept deserved the name. I don't think the new c7 did. I think just calling it the new c7 was good enough. But I can see why they did it. Its about money unfortunately not keeping a tradition.
"DETROIT – Chevrolet is redefining modern performance with today’s debut of the all-new Corvette Stingray. And only a Corvette with the perfect balance of technology, design and performance can wear the iconic Stingray designation."
That statement made me laugh. My `76 was a major dog in the performance category when it was new. That has since been rectified but it's still not a 'perfect balance' of anything. I love the darn thing but that doesn't change what it is, and what it isn't.
I decided to get my original Stingray out of the storage locker yesterday and take it for a little drive. It came right to life, snorting and shaking and filling the air with noxious fumes. I simply could not resist lighting up the tires, winding thru the gears and listening to the unmistakable big block roar out the sidepipes. Got several honks and thumbs up. A pretty young thing even asked me for a ride...which I promptly brushed off. Don't need any trouble in my old age.
Evidently Chevy does not want to let go of the image either. The cars have nothing in common, so borrowing the name is either a) a ploy to garner more sales, or b) a compliment to an icon from a bygone era. Either way, I am glad the name has also been kept alive.

I'm with you Rat. GM nailed it with the new C7. The body lines are bad to the bone and well deserve the stingray badge. Not sure the history of why some years have it and some not. Most likely marketing. I for one think this new Vette is very well designed and more than worthy.

Being an old fart, I really don't care for everything that is new. I can accept change...because everything changes and nothing stays the same...but that doesn't mean I and my fellow old farts have to like it. The new Vettes, including the C7, are undoubtedly engineering masterpieces and VERY fast and can go around corners really well. The problem is...they idle so smooth, you can't even tell the engine is running.
I was just commenting on how glad I am that the original Stingray...at least in it's early and more powerful forms...is finally receiving some sort of recognition for what it was...and still is today. Honestly, I don't remember ever referring to these cars as Stingrays. They have always been either a Corvette or a Vette. I just wish people would stop referring to them as cheap and affordable.
