When I turn the key on my 76 Vette it acts like it has a week battery...kinda boggs down then starts like a week battery does. The battery is only about 2 years old but the car does sit up alot especially in the winter. I charged it today but It still kind of boggs down when starting. Could this be a starter going out instead of the battery.
But the car does start? Most places that service batteries, have a battery capacity tester. I know my local Ford dealer has one. They can immediately tell you if your battery is weak. A good idea is to buy a large capability battery charger,,,say from Sears. Put the large battery charger across your battery when you start the car and the engine should spin over quickly.
From what I've read, a lead-acid battery looses about 1/3 of it's capacity once it goes completely dead. Once dead it's really not going to be the same. Did your battery go completely dead in its lifetime?
If you need a new starter, get one of GM Performance Parts catalog ministarters. They are really powerful and weigh about half of the traditional starter. Since they're smaller, they're not so much effected by hear from the exhaust manifold.

my 5+ year old battery was showing its age, down to 9.59v during cranking. Got a new mini-starter 7.5#(old 24#)
now it is over 10v due to less amp draw, so i can delay replacing. and i'll get that wal-mart size 26 for $50 instead ofthat heavy $80 clunker that that old starter needed.
Pull and clean both the +12 and ground lines at the battery, the gund where it hooks tot he frame member by the battery, the +12 and ground terminals at the starter and the ground at the engine block connection. See what this does.
