The A-hole that painted the car left off the lock retainers, so the locks kepr falling out...
I finally got around to pulling the door panels to rectify the problem.
This is what I found
Looks like bathroom caulk. Put on while paint was new. The super thin plastic just fell off when I removed the panel. The caulk is STUCK to the door!!
Any ideas on how to remove this mess without destoying the door?
I just used a product called "goo gone" (and I think there is some stuff called "goof off" which might be the same) to remove bathroom tile/tub sealer from floor tile. It got it off without difficulty. You might try something like this on a small area to make sure it didn't hurt your paint.

How do you know the painter did it? No sense labeling someone an A-hole if they're not the culprit. It could have been the butler, in the conservatory, with the lead pipe.
The inner door is steel. You might be able to scrape off the gook.
I am absolutely certain who is responsible for the caulk. CDT's Auto Restoration & Collision Repair in Conroe charged over $10K for this. They even included an addendum to the bill charging an extra 100$ per door to "order the barrier"
I am afraid anything that will soften the caulk, would blister the paint..

Hi,
I'm surprised the shop didn't think of 3M strip caulk.
Don't all body shops have black 'dum-dum' on the shelf?
I think I'd begin by trying to remove the bathroom caulk with a flexible plastic scraper.
Regards,
Alan
Looks like half that amount was spent on caulking.
Seriously though... 3M Caulk Remover is available at stores like Home Depot or Lowes. The chemical dissolves the bond between the caulk and the surface it's stuck to. It all cleans up with soap and water so I doubt very much that it will harm automotive paint.
Will pick up some Goof Off and 3M caulk remover this week. Thank god for the electronics attatched to the lock retainers. No parts required to keep the locks in the door
While not as pretty as the factory caulk, what harm is it doing if you just leave it there?
Simple answer:
I just can't ignore wrong... I would know what it looks like behind the panel.
Say I left it... You would pile more (or something else) on top of it?

Have you ever seen how ugly the orignal factory caulking and water barriers were?
