On my 74 I pulled on the headlight **** and the **** pulled right out. I bought another **** and tried to take the whole shaft out of the headlight mechanism where all the wiring is but could not figure it out
Has anyone replaced just the **** on these cars
There is a small spring-loaded button on the headlight switch assembly that is accessed once the driver-side dash panel has been pulled away from its mount.
Here's a photo of what it looks like and what to do to release the headlight plunger. The plunger shaft is 3 or 4-sided in length (triangle or squared, can't recall). Essentially, the plunger has a groove (or "key") that the spring button retains when the plunger is pushed all the way in.
The plunger is released by pulling all the way out then pushing the button down. IIRC, simply pushing the shaft back in will snap back into place. See the photo for better illustration:
