I've been searching a lot to try and decide between Hagerty and NCM, but I'm still seeing some conflicting things. I have gotten online quotes from both companies, and the price differences were not all that much, so thats not the issue. I think as far as allowed mileage, I can get the same with either company (3000-5000 range is plenty). So I guess the only other deciding factor would be which one will allow me to use the car the way I want. I have read that people were going to NCM because they had less restrictions, but then I also just read that Hagerty was less restrictive about using it for the occasional errand, like going to the store with it. Bottom line is, I have a DD car for work and most other things, but I do not want to be worried that if I take my dad for a spin, or take the car to the store or something, that I will not be covered if something happens.
Help me decide, I need to get this thing of my DD insurance company.
I went with NCM because the have an occasional drive to work option. I don't ever need to drive it to get groceries. But I can drive it to the parts store to get parts for it.
Q: What are Hagerty's usage restrictions?
A: Simply put, we want your clients to enjoy their classic vehicles. Usage for club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours and limited pleasure driving is acceptable. While there is no mileage limitation specified in the policy, limited pleasure use does NOT mean that vehicles will be used for normal or backup transportation such as driving to and from work, school or errands. The policy also requires insurance be maintained on regular-use automobiles at all times.
Rules are merely suggestions!
Seriously though, I don't use mine for any of those anyway so I guess it never really effected me that much and great rates .

I went with NCM because they seemed to be less restrictive and Adam Boca is great to work with. Give him a call and see if he can address your concerns. Talk is cheap.

Thanks for throwing us in the mix! While I can not answer for Hagerty I can give you some information on us.
We insure vehicles used for the following: Car Shows, Club Events, Parades, Occasional Pleasure Use.
Occasional Pleasure Use does not include errands, BUT if you are on your way back from a car show and very quickly swing in and out of a grocery store you are fine. We do not expect you to have to go back home to get your daily use vehicle.
IF your sole purpose is to leave your house to go to the store or mall, you are best suited for standard auto insurance. No collector car company will insure if the car is to be used for errands.
The company we use is the only company that has the 9-5 option, which allows you to drive your collector car to work up to 2 times per week if you purchase this endorsement.
Please feel free to email me at adam@corvettemuseum.org or give us a call if you have anymore questions.
Are you allowed to drive it to a repair shop with Hagerty? I work at a dealer, most of the times when I take it to work it's to work on it after hours. It doesn't seem like this would be an issue with NCM
My experiance with Hagerty has been excellant..
Just back in Oct. had a tire failure right at the house..
Saw that I needed new tires , called them up and had it taken by flat bed to the tire shop.
No questions asked.. ( BTW the Car and my hands stayed clean )
Got this straight from the site.
"Simply put, we want you to enjoy your classic vehicle. While there are some restrictions in the policy, you’re covered for pleasure use, whether it's a drive on a gorgeous summer day, a trip to the ice cream shop, attending club events or going to shows. If you have specific questions about usage, especially if you own a newer vehicle (generally 1990 and newer), we're happy to discuss them with you "
Let me clarify ..they did ask if I was in a safe place and called back with arrival time, company and a follow up quality call to assure my satisfaction.
More than usage restrictions, when picking an insurance company, am most concerned with how they settle claims, especially major ones. I have Haggerty and my only claim experience was a broken side window. I broke the window myself prying off the clip for the lock cylinder. Easy dealing with Haggerty but that was a small claim. Suppose they could have given me a hard time since I broke the window.
Would be very interested to see feedback from those with higher dollar claims.
Adam...can you assist with this hypothetical situation/question
Policy #1 - classic car insurance agreed value
Policy #2 - covers daily driver but also insured has the classic car listed on the daily driver with stated value
Scenario #1: Accident occurs at an approved event/show/cruise in the classic car. Is 100% of the claim allowed to be processed through Policy#1 and they will not prorate the amounts between the 2 coverages based on the ratio of agreed to stated value amount? Reason to have the classic car on Policy #2 is to have coverage at least at a stated value during a non-approved usage event as otherwise Policy #2 would apply ACV since coverage follows the driver, correct? And yes of course it would cost a lot to insure the car on both policies but at least it is covered regardless of usage while it may be an uphill battle on the stated value policy there would be a fighting chance
Scenario #2: Accident occurs in classic car at a non-approved event. Would only the "agreed value" of the classic car insured not be covered but the liability & damages to another auto be insured be covered under Policy #1 or would all the claim be processed through Policy #2.
I called Hagerty last summer to specifically ask about the occasional commute to work in the vette. The lady I spoke with told me Hagerty doesn't have a problem with occasional fun use, even if it's to run errands at the store or go to work once in a while, as long as it's not being used as your daily driver for those activities.
