A Facebook friend and I were having a discussion about IF there were actually 2 yellows offered for the Corvette in 1977.
The 1953-2012 Corvette Black Book lists:
Code 52 Corvette Yellow, 71 Produced
Code 56 Corvette Bright Yellow, 1,942 Produced
The other guy says he was doing touch up work on new 1977's and there was only 1 yellow offered for Corvette. His old RM paint charts show only 1 yellow for Corvette also.
Does anyone have pictures of Trim Tags for the two Yellows they could post.
I don't know if there is a difference in the two yellows. Unlike the black book, I think Chevrolet called both code 52 and 56, Bright Yellow. There could be a slight difference to the shades, I don't know. Both colors were applied to 77 Corvettes though. For some reason, GM replaced code 52, with code 56, early in the 77 production run.
In the late 70's and early 80's, it wasn't out of the ordinary, for GM to change colors on various models. They may have had trouble sourcing a paint from a supplier, forcing the change. They might have changed it because of the reaction of focus groups, or they could have had problems applying a particular color? Even today, GM will have production holds on colors, cancel colors during the model year, and add new colors.
If someone out there has a copy of the PPG paint codes they would be able to clear this one up pretty quickly. I had one, but I sold it along with my Red 77 or I would have looked it up. Sorry.
