I have a 68 427/435 tripower coupe. As I look through the various parts catalogs, I see an aluminum expansion tank that seems like it has something to do with the cooling system. My car doesn't have one. Should it? Thanks!
No, your car shouldn't have one. Only the 327 without a/c had the tank in '68 according to my NCRS guide. Another unique feature to the '68s as the 427s in 69 had the tank.
The expansion tank is not a stock item.
I have one on my 74 that was used at the track exclusively.
The tank allows for continuous air purging from the cooling system for maximum cooling system efficiency.
On my setup there is a heat sensor switch that's attached to the aluminum housing of the tank that controls a relay to turn on the electric fans as well. Pretty cool actually-do you need this NO.
Stock copper/brass radiators with fill caps did not use the expansion tank. Aluminum radiators with no separate fill caps used the tanks. Some big block AC cars with copper/brass radiators may have used a different style tank (painted brass, not aluminum). Check the AIM for model years specifics.
