Default 1978 engine and trans question.

Coupe of questions.
1. What type of trans did the come with? 350 right? Also would a trans, drive shaft and trans yoke from any other year c3 work (1976-1982)?

2. the engine that these came with was nothing special correct? so any chevy 350 from this era will work?

3. Im assuming the pace cars and all other 78s were just different by the paint, interior and VIN correct?

Thanks!

Not sure about the differences between the the TH350, TH400 or the Muncie and the Borg Warner, but as far as the small block 350, it orig.inated in 68' and was unchanged until 87', when the updated version of the L98 came out, if I'm not mistaken. Manual trans small blocks do have a ball stud that bolts into the block, but automatic blocks can be drilled and tapped for this.

By 78, Corvettes were equipped with the 350 which began to see service in 1975-76. The tunnel for C3 was designed for the turbo 400 so there is some nice room when there's a 4 speed up in there.

Other than horsepower designations designations, and the LT1, smallblocks were basically the same with the exception of emission control devices and air flow.

In 78, the hood was designed to permit hot air to exhaust through the rear while cool air was directed through the radiator. The hood was slighly higher toward the rear and therefore should fit most refits. But in the later years, leading up to 78, cool air was brought in through plenums that sat on the radiator and fed the air cleaner. This is in contrast to the single chrome air cleaner from earlier years that sat atop the carb. Engineers learned by late years that the radiator directed cool air increased horsepower

Than there are the emission control devices that eventually took up space such as the smog pump, diverter valves, pipes that plugged into the manifolds, EFE, EGR, etc.
