I have the fuel sender out of my 82 for a fuel pump replacement but would like to check the sender. Does anyone know how to do that? The wire harness has two tan and one black wire. I thought you could attach the multimeter leads to the right point then move the float and that would be how to check it or so I think. I just don't know where to put the leads? I have tried several areas but nothing so far??
There is a step by step procedure to test it. I believe I got it off the Willcox website. Check there
I went there and it's a little confusing because the color of wires are different than on my 82. I didn't really see where he checked the sender but the gauge itself.
My 82 was a bit different also. But on mine the pink wire is going to the center pin on the sender. Its pink on one side of connector and brownish on the other.

Ok then where do you put the ground probe to check the float?
My gauge is pegged at 3Oclock position. I provided a ground to the signal wire at the tank connector and it went to empty. My gauge works, the wiring is connected, so im replacing my sending unit. Spend your time checking the gauge and wiring and eliminate the sending unit. By the time you pull it out to check it through its travel, you may as well change it. I do have a new fuel tank on my list of future parts as these have a bladder that can interfere with the float. I dont think mine has this issue yet, but its only a matter of time.
