Looking for suggestions / pics for building a crate or pallet for shipping an engine..................a complete big block. Need to ship one and want it to arrive safely.
Thanks,
Rex
I have never shipped an engine, but I can tell you when I worked at a steel slitting place, we had to had build pallets out of kiln dried hardwood. Home center lumber isn't strong enough and has too much moisture content which can rust steel as the weight of something like an engine compresses it and/or the wood dries out.
Maybe google some pics of crate engines from GM or something and see how they are packaged.
Can you weld? Maybe go to your local motorsports dealer and see if you can get a used steel shipping crate from a quad. My local farm and fleet gives them away for free, go karts and chinese quads/mopeds are shipped in them. bases are fairly sturdy and you can cut them down and re-weld some stronger uprights to bolt the engine to. Just a though...
They also have one for transmissions (which I use as well).
Seems to hold up well in shipping and definitely protects what's inside. I would recommend these cases to anyone based upon my experience with them. Scribner does not sell direct, but I didn't have any trouble locating a supplier.
