I'm restoring my 69 427/390 convertible.
Are the side pipes cast aluminum?
My insulation fiberglass pieces are brittle and one has a broken off end which will need to be remolded?
As I flip through catelogs, everyone sells reproduction factory side pipe sets and some say do or don't include insulation/mounts but I can't seem to find a price on just the insulation pieces?
Hi C,
Paragon Corvette Reproductions is the producer of the reproduction insulators and chrome plated shields that are on the market.
Check their catalogue. They sell the insulators separately.
When you see the price you may try to repair yours! BUT, their parts are REALLY nice!

Alan
Hi C,
I'm not quite sure what you're asking.
The plated shields bolted to the fiberglass insulator that was then screwed to the rocker. Part of the insulator, (semi-flat black), is visible for it's entire length between the shields and the rocker. The insulator actually hides the rocker.
There was also a foil wrapped insulator that was installed along length of the muffler. Is THAT what you're asking about?

Alan
Here's the fiberglass insulator front and rear. These are often broken because the fiberglass is pretty fragile.
These are chrome plated shields painted black
Hi C,
That's the foil wrapped heat insulator.
It was part of the system that was installed in St. Louis at the factory.
I rarely see it being used on cars with the side exhaust today. Maybe because people just don't have any $$$ left after buying the system?!?

Alan
So are these covers made from cast aluminum?
If so, what do you think about having them welded together to keep them firm and to assist holding them firm to the insulator piece?
Hi C,
Can the shields even be welded?
If the insulators are in good/usable condition the 11 small screws used to fasten the shields to the insulators hold the shield's 3 pieces very solidly in place.

Alan
