Today was hinge pins on the drivers door. I found it easiest to take the hinge cover off of the top hinge, take the four bolts out, then drive the bottom hinge pin up and out, then pull back the door. With the door supported on jacks and my helpers holding it upright of course. This allows enough room for the upper pin to be driven out without hitting anything and for the new one to go in without having to cut or dremel anything. Replaced all of the bushings, and the upper pin first, then put door back in place and do lower hinge pin and bolt the upper back in. Door shuts great now and has no slack. This also killed about 50% of the rattles I was hearing while driving. Then me and one of my helpers went for a cruise and were rewarded for our "hard" work...
Been driving it to work a lot and to a few sonic cruise ins and have had a blast with it this summer. The garage is cooling off and some more work can get done! First, I had to fix a cracked spot on the hood where the AC compressor met it in the past. I assume an engine mount went south and caused it. To do a temporary cover up until I can paint it, I did the ricer boy plasti dip and made a stripe. Doesnt look too awful bad if I say so myself:
I could have cut the lines a bit more even as they are definitely not, but oh well, for a 6 dollar temporary cover up that peels right off, it cant be beat.
Next I had to fix my headlight system, no good pics of that other than to show that the bracket comes right off of the new vac canister and it goes right in place of the old one in the clamp. I did have to engineer a new end for one of the actuators I rebuilt as it broke off, but a few hours with some cut up bolt threads, a die set and a long nut and its all back together. No more prying open my headlights!!! Hopefully this fall I can get the bumpers off and refurbished/replaced and some paint work accomplished.
Its been a slow few months when it comes to working on the Corvette. Life has a way of doing that. Painted the emblems, could use another coat on the white in the flags. Also had to wire brush the white letters to turn them white. Westleys Bleach White wouldnt touch what was on these. They have been dingy looking since new but are bright white now. Saving my money for the rear end rebuild.
I spend a lot of time in Beebe. My in laws body shop that I can't afford to use is located there. Around 1 more year for me before Air Force retirement.....
I finally got the passengers door hinge pins and last piece of weatherstrip replaced last night. I replaced a broken window regulator spring and it works great now. One of the new forum members, dbez came over with his 78 and lended a hand.
I realized its been a year now since I left that stupid light in the door...i rescued it! Plugged it in to the charger and today it works just fine!
My one year old calipers were looking....about a year old... So I gave them a few coatings of red dupli-color. If these calipers last long enough to ever need painted again, I might spring for the G2 stuff as I feel it would last longer, but for 20 bucks, its hard to argue with the results.
Front bumper spray bomb rehab. Did a lot of sanding, priming, sanding, then masked and shot some white. In the right light you can tell its not the same paint type, but came out way better than the above pics with the cracked paint look. Will do until I get around to painting the whole car. I still have some chips/cracks around the headlight openings to deal with..
Also, adjusted the drivers headlight. It now sits flush when closed unlike the pics above.
