Default A few newbie questions...

I am new to my classic '72 corvette but have a few questions regarding certain issues I can't figure out, so I hoped I could get some answers on here.

1) Where is the high beam switch? They are on but I can't turn them off and get flashed by other drivers at night.

2) My wiper cowl opens up properly with the engine running and vacuum in the lines, but as soon as I turn my wipers on, they go through 1-cycle then on their way back down the wiper cowl closes ontop of them. What is causing this?

3) I have the saddle interior, but the kickpanels are painted to match. One is cracked and I'm looking to replace it. Is there any place I can get the proper tan color of paint to match them?

Thanks!

Under the carpet beneath your left foot. Owner's manual will tell you about it.

Check the vacuum switch on the base of the right side wiper arm.

Saddle colors can vary. My advice would be to take one of the kick panels to a SEM automotive interior dye dealer (automotive paint retailers) and have them scan the color for a match.

(My 73 is a foot switch , left hand side under the carpet , i'm sure yours is too)

( Not sure , sorry)

(I would take a piece into your local paint place and have them mix you up a matching rattle can)
Thanks!
Good luck

Ya know, one of the best things a new C3 Corvette owner should buy is the set of 'must-have' documents for your Corvette.

1. FSM or Factory Service Manual
2. AIM or Assembly Manual
3. Owners Manual

Between these three, you'll have just about all you need and then, add us for the rest.

Order a reproduction owner's manual.

A loose/missing vacuum hose. Willcox has this on their site. Upper left corner is what you're looking for.

Hi C72,
WELCOME!
If that's your 72 in your avatar it looks like a very nice car. Good Luck as you get to know it.
The headlight and wiper door vacuum systems are kinda complicated and somewhat difficult to trouble shoot.
There are some good sources of trouble shooting information though. Check out the restoration section on the Willcox, (link from the list of vendors on the side of this page), web site. The systems and their parts are explained there. It will get you some knowledge and understanding so you can get your wipers working properly.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Hi c72,
I took a look at your pictures and it STILL looks like a NICE car!
I notice there have been a few changes in the engine compartment... is the original engine block still there.... it SURE would be nice if it is?
Again, good luck as you get to know it!
Regards,
Alan

The engine block casting number is 3970010 which is original. I believe the heads are as well, but I haven't pulled the valve covers to check their casting number. Everything has been rebuilt with high performance in mind. A previous owner down in Detroit, Michigan did it.

Hi c72,
I believe you'll want to check the stamp pad that's on the front of the block just below the right side head.
There will be 2 groups of numbers; one indicating when the engine was built and in what h.p. configuration; and another with a partial VIN number indicating what car the engine went into in St. Louis.
Here's a picture from a 71, 350, base engine. .....'CJL' indicates a base engine, 4-speed. ....6589 is the car it was installed in.
Regards,
Alan

So now I have (2) other problems I have to fix to get my car to pass inspection:

1) The blower doesn't work at all on the heater control. The vacuum lines are hooked up & there is vacuum (can hear it when I disconnect the lines with the car running). The temperature control cord moves freely. And from what I can tell I got continuity on the harness. The fuse was blown, but I replaced it. But still nuttin, no heat, no defrost. I'm guessing the contacts on my switch are shot? On the fan, under the hood, on the passenger side, there is an orange power terminal, and a black ground on a nearby bolt.

2) My wipers work, but the washer pump doesn't. There are (2) wires connected to it, a blue (passenger side) and a yellow (driver side), with a ground on a bolt beside it. The washer fluid container is full, the main hose, as well as, each hose going to the wipers is free and not restricted. I can hear a "click" when I press the button on the dash, but no motor/pump going, so my guess is the pump is shot.

Any other comments anybody may have as to my problems? So I can get these fixed....Thx!

When the car is on the blower should be running at one speed or another. The orange wire that goes to the horn relay on the driver’s side should have a inline fuse the runs to a relay that controls the high speed on the blower at least that’s the way it is on a a/c car. Have you check to see if the blower motor works? The wires that run to the blower can easily be tested with a test light as well.

I have a non A/C car and I tested the blower/wires running to it. Everything checked out fine.

So I removed the blower motor off the firewall, turned out it was pretty worn out. I replaced it with a new one and my blower worked, heat/defrost and all. I also installed my new washer pump and hooked up the new wiring that came with it, and that worked as well, so now I should be good to pass an inspection!
