Today, I hooked up the vac advance on the HEI and what a difference! It's a whole different car now. Thanks for the write-up REELEV8R, but low-end torque is NOT a problem on this car now. Seriously. The throttle response is amazing. It's too early to tell, but I wouldn't doubt my MPG has improved too. Best $1.86 I ever spent! (for a few feet of vac hose). I drove it up a big hill and lugged the engine a bit while listening for detonation and didn't notice any. Ditto on a few high-rpm runs. I still want to dial in the carb because the gas smell is overwhelming in my garage, so I know something isn't quite right on that front, but I'm definitely a lot closer in performance to where I expected to be.

Glad to hear that low end torque is not a problem that eliminates a lot of work for you. Surprising sometimes how the little stuff can have such a dramatic affect on performance. Now go have some fun with it.
Oh, I have been, and will.
It's definitely made it a much more appealing to drive. When I got the car, I have to admit the performance was a bit disappointing. It was fast, for sure, but it just did not feel like a 383 in a 3300 lb car, IMO. Now it does. I haven't even played with the actually adjusting the timing at all. At this altitude (7000 ft), it may respond to a little more advance (current initial timing is 16*). Changing the jets as Lars suggested above will be my next adventure.
