Default Changing seat colors?

I have a buddy that has some new reproduction Knock, silver, leather/vinyl seat covers that I would buy if I could successfully change the color to black.

Anybody have any successful experience with changing seat colors and advice?

(Hard for me to believe you can successfully change a seat color?)

i recent dyed the interior in my 81 and just used a dupli color vinyl spay bomb. make sure you scuff the area with an sos or steel wool to scuff up the area to be dyed. this will help with adhesion.
it worked for me

SEM ColorCoat elastomeric recoloring agent (aka, vinyl dye) should work OK. I have used it on leather steering wheel [hand sweat, fingernails, etc] and have had no loss of color in 3+ years. And, it works fine on all plastics and rubber, too.

As mentioned, you need to clean, clean, clean...especially all the Armor-All cr@p off the surface. I did a final wipe with clean cloth and lacquer thinner, just to make sure there were no oils on the surface before spraying the SEM.

I would suggest that you call Al Knoch and ask what they recommend for recoloring those seats (other than buying another new set ).

SEM Colorcoat is great stuff! Preparation is the key to success.
I put a new head liner in my wife's E36 BMW, and redyed the sunvisors, clips, and ceiling handles black using some black Plastcote vinyl dye. Wasn't impressed, but then, I wasn't as "attentive" as I would have been on the Stingray!

Might test a piece and see how it comes out.

This stuff does not sound like something you would want to get on your hands or worse yet, breath

Meaning what? Lacquer thinner cleans tools and gets the dye off your hands/fingers. Common sense says to wear a mask when spraying it.

I have dyed every part of an interior but the seats. And I have had no problems. Most of the parts of the interior do not get any abuse, so they would stay nice for a long time. The seats however are a different story. I know they can be done and will come out nice, but how will they look after 1 year or 2 years of getting in and out of the car. Remember the leather and vinyl will stretch and wrinkle over time.
Its your interior. But I would call the supplier to see how successful it would be in the long run.

I shot SEM dark blue over black in my 68 going on 20 years ago. Still there; has not faded or worn off. SEM is good stuff.

Sounds good Mike. I have used SEM on the hard parts in the interior.

How do you think the material was colored when the seats were new? Vinyl dye is used to .....dye vinyl (and other plastics, and rubber, and leather). It is basically a paint product that is much thinner, has a very dense pigment concentration, and has elastomers added so that the recolored surface can flex.

Not brain surgery... if you want good results, use the right stuff. (Liquid SEM ColorCoat, sprayed on)
