Default rear bumper bracket question

my bumper brackets were attached to the frame with 2 bolts each, i made sure to keep each bracket with the hardware togeather as they came off car. so now that its going back togeather its another puzzle, the left bracket was 2 bolts, 2 serated washers, and 2 nuts, right side 2 bolts, 4 serated washers (one between bolt and frame, the other between the nut and frame) and 2 nuts. the aim is not clear to me, lot ging on in the illustration, anybody know how it os supposed to be

My car only had the two large washers on each bolt head. From the looks of your pics (I cant see the bumper attachment end, but it looks like they are correctly oriented left/right) it looks like there were two washers used as shims on the 'left bracket' (the one on the right in the pic) in between the bracket and frame. I assume this was done to shim it up...? Try mounting without the washers and see how it aligns with the hole in the rear panel.

If you've changed out body mounts, you may need to shim and adjust all over again.

I can't remember, because I'm now on an aftermarket frame, but if you've got space on the inboard side of the frame I would use a large washer for each nut as well; to prevent gouging. This area was a challenge on the SRIII frame because the tube takes up too much space for a washer under each nut.

Also, recommend you thread a bumper attachment bolt loosely into the end, then guide the bracket up install the bolts. Then keep an eye on things as you tighten 'em up.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Hi 73s,
I looked at my 71 and there are 2 of the serrated washers on each bolt.
It would not surprise me one bit if your car got out of St.Louis missing 2 washers.
Regards,
Alan

VERY nice looking fasteners!

In the 72 AIM, same rear bumper page as your post, shows a serrated washer under the bolt head, bolt passing through the bracket and frame, and a second serrated washer and nut for attachment.

Awesome... For the rest of us, please take some pictures during install and after completion... I'm about 6 months behind you and for some reason, and I can't find the pictures of me removing the brackets that you are dealing with... Good pictures on the 2 pairs on the inner rear bumpers, but none on the outside ;-( I have the AIM, but you know as well as I do, actual pictures are much better...

Thanks much
