It sounds like you found a nice, original, '81, which is IMO the best looking later C3's. Unfortunately, they have the body of a supermodel, with the driveline of a pig. Keep the car original looking, use your father/son time to upgrade the drivetrain to equal the appearance, and you will have a great car.

I hate to see any all original car modded. I think you'd be better off finding a less expensive car that needed work. You'd have more money to spend on the mods and more time working with your son. Plus you get to see Bubba's handiwork!
FWIW: Leave the car alone. It has managed to survive essentially stock and unmolested all this time and has been thoughtfully cared for by the previous owner. It has earned the right to survive.
Sell this one and purchase another for a project.
Get another one that you could do whatever upgrades that you want to and not feel bad about it.
Thanks guys for all your help and I thought about each one as I read them. I think we will slowly do mods to it and just injoy the time with my son. He is going to college this fall and they grow up fast. We talked about doing small mods or upgrades during breaks from school. He is already asking when he can start driving it some to high school before the end of his senior year. We just got it Tuesday. I told him, lets change the fluids, check the brakes, change the windshield wipers, belts. You guys know, the usual stuff, then he can drive it all he wants until summer.
It was said earlier on this post,"cars come and go but time with your son is priceless." I think he is old enough and starting to realize it as well.
