I've got a 78 w/ red carpet, and I have the same thing, original carpet under new carpet. Both sets are in bad shape. Floor pans are like new. I would go with the thinking of extra insulation to help keep the noise & heat out. Or maybe it was just a red thing.

Alan had me going too. I just didn't want to be the first reply saying "really???" in case it wasn't true. Now I don't feel so bad for believing it.

I see two reasons why to have two sets of carpet in your car. One, It makes short people sit up a little higher so you can see over the steering wheel. Every 1/8th inch counts. Two, He wanted extra padding for his feet so he though two sets were better than one.
