The po to my 69 vette told me the motor was from an early 70's camaro.
I've been able to verify this from the casting number. I am doing a frame off resto and have the tranny out. It appears to be a TH400, I verified through the 13 bolts and the unusual pattern of the pan. My question is:
The tranny bolts directly to the trans mount, the drive shaft looks Oem.
I,m wondering if 69 vettes came from the factory with TH400's? Oh the casting number on the tail indicates its from 73 and its 4 1/4 inches long
The tranny is 24 3/4 + 4 1/4 = 29 inches over all length. It fit perfectly I just want to verify there's been no modification by the po for it to fit. Thanks
69s came with the th400 from the factory, actually the th 400 was the only automatic used ,until replaced by the lighter th350 in about 1976 so it should fit and as they are pretty tough its quite probably original hope this is some help
All C3's with automatic trans were THM-400's until 1974, I believe. And, all C3 BB's w/auto trans were supplied with THM-400's. In '74 or '75, the SB cars went to the THM-350. From then till 1981, it was the THM-350, with the '81 transmission also having a lockup clutch. In 1982, the 700-R4 made its debut; it had an overdrive (.67:1.0) 4th gear and lockup clutch.
Nope. My 74 SBC came w/ a TH400. Think the 76 is correct. Not sure though.
Only reason I know for sure is it is one of the few "numbers matching" correct pieces to my car.
I had to check the book..Oh no! not the book!.......>

according to the C-3 Restorer's Guide? The TH400 [bullet proof] was the only automatic available until 1976, the TH350 was then the base automatic, and you would only get the TH400 with the L-82 option. And then its unclear when the TH400was dropped? I think 1977 was the last year for the TH400 in a Vette? Only trying to help here because I'm just reading on this one. The man that said lock-up convertor in the TH350 in 1981 is right, and right on the 82 700R4 [got one]. Again according to this book, not me so don't kick me to hard!
