Going to look at it friday. The owner says it was restored in 1995http://houston.craigslist.org/cto/3641632213.html and he has owned it since then, numbers matching according to the owner. Originally was a California car, its also been in Florida and now in Texas. He is asking a firm $20,000, says everything works except the odometer. Auto, air,PS,PW,Pb. What ya'll think?

Hello forum member dan1495 has already looked at this car. He is very knowledgable about these cars and would probably be glad to share his opinion with you. You can look him up on this forum and send him a PM. I am sure that he would be glad to talk to you.

Good luck

In the ad he says it's a survivor after saying it's been restored, so technically it's not a survivor. You could explain that to him with your offer.

Looks like a nice car, but seems pricey to me. It's gonna need some cleaning up in the engine compartment, that's for sure. It would sure be a nice driver, though.

looks like a real nice car, and WELL WORTH 20k in my opinion! assuming there is no hidden probs like frame or bird cage rust....i suspect he was using the term "survivor" in the broader more traditional sense (as in it has survived for the last 41 years and still is in good shape) not every vette owner is as familiar with certain terminology as most of us fanatics are that post here (including me, LOL) which also means you need to find out what his definition of "matching numbers" is.....good luck with it! Could be a nice car if everything checks out but I would want it for less money. With a base motor (200 hp) and an automatic the performance won't be too inspiring. Ontario Orange is a great color.

Snoopy,

just an opinion, ok?

Strong buyers market
not a 4 speed
not a convertible

20k seems on the high side for this car..
it is nice, just the market is what is driving pricing right
now...

Looks worth checking out.
At one time a good condition base motor car was a low 20k car. Prices do seem to be going up again.

The car does look to be all there as far as 'original', but I'd go a step further if even thinking about spending $15k or more on it.
Spend an hour under the hood gathering part #'s & date codes off of the alternator, distributor, intake, block, water pump, etc. This will tell you as to which level of completion it is.
I have the same '72 as this one (except for colors), although mine unfortunately did not have the original motor when I bought it (had a brand new crate engine), and I still paid well less than HALF of what this guy wants.

If all the above checked out, I would feel secure at $12-14K going off of his word, but that's just me. $15-20K = homework and lots of it. We are all here to help!

Good luck!

Probably apples to oranges but a very nice 71 with 4 speed and working a/c could not get 15,500.00 in Pensacola Fl last year. Finally took 12,500.00. Prices have fallen ans sellers need to learn that or hold on to the car until they think things will get better. P.S., this car was a good 8 out of ten on paint, interior and engine compartment.

The left/front of the car seems to be riding higher than the right/front....curious. Back end doesn't seem to have the same problem. Might want to ask about that.

Maybe this fellow paid a very high price for the car shortly after a major restoration and the car has seen some years of light use but not much 'care'. Don't know anything about the frame/cage condition or how the mechanicals function.

If no 'red flags' on operating systems or frame/cage condition, that's a very nice....restored....car, which minor detailing can bring back pretty easily. I can see that car getting $20K, if there is enough demand for it....but I wouldn't start there.
