Default Help With 73 Interior Install

I am in the process of re-installing the interior of my 73 & in desperate need of the correct screws that attach the lower dash pads to the upper dash. These screws have a metal ferrel that prevent the screw from pulling through the vinyl when tightened. Does anyone know of a vendor that sells the correct screws?

Get the whole set, you'll probably need some other screw too or you may lose one down the road.

But, if you don't want to I believe these are the ones you are looking for:

I have three original screws & they have a different style ferrel than the willcox screws which is what most of the vendors sell. I would really like to find original style screws but that may not be an option.

It's possible the 3 you have are wrong?
The Willcox sets are very accurate......

Post a picture of what you're referring to. I have a feeling the ferrel you are referring to was actually part of the dash that came out due to wear and tear.

I think you may be correct I am sure that's a possibility anyway.

Hi,
The ferrel that's on the dash screws is part of the screw, not part of the dash panel.
The ferrel is compressed slightly during manufacture when it's installed on the screw. It should not be able to come off the screw; but should spin freely.
The purpose of the ferrel is to prevent the head of the screw from grabbing and twisting the vinyl slightly as the screw is tightened. It also helps prevent the screw from pulling through the dash panel.
Regards,
Alan

The screws with the ferrel are available.

Thanks Alan, do you have a picture of the screws with the ferrel compressed on?

I've taken my dash out numerous times and have never had the ferrel come out. Mine seem to have seized to the dash and no longer spin freely, so when I unscrew I'm actually unscrewing from the dash and ferrel.

gr8t73, are three of yours still embedded in the dash?

Steve

I know you said "correct", but, if you don't care about originality you can buy oval head stainless screws at Lowes or Home Depot with a matching finishing washer. Looks nice and works well.

Hi Steve,
Here are some pictures of the screws with ferrels that were used on the face of the right and left dash pads, and also two pictures of the screw (2 each side), that were used on the side of the dash pad on the hinge pillar.
There were also smaller screws that were used to mount the gauge cluster bezel to the dash pad. These were some times chrome and sometimes black oval head phillips screws similar to but shorter and smaller than the screws used on the face of the pads.
Regards,
Alan

The '73 AIM refers the ferrel as "eyelet", page 76 if you have the AIM.

Also has a note for the eyelets: "Paint body intr. trim color"

Dr. Rebuild lists a set of screws with eyelets, I'd give them a call:

A Screw & Eyelet 10 Piece Set 1466555 4.20
