Default Changed rear diff fluid , Question

I had the fluid changed on my 1979 with stock rear end . Went ahead and did as recommended . 2 bottles of the GM fluid with one bottle of additive . My mechanic said it was low and I did not have any more fluid . Do I need to add or is a little low ok . Everything seems ok . Please chime in .

Mine takes a little more than two bottles to fill. Of course it depends how much you can get drained or pumped out before refilling. With the car level, the lube should be at the bottom of the fill hole just short of running out. I filled mine with the front slightly lower than level and I probably have 3-4 oz. more then required. I would fill it to the bottom of the plug. mike...

Thanks mike , so do you think I am ok with the two bottles as recommended . I don't want to go back to the shop and put it on the lift again unless its absolutely necessary . Chris .

I can not answer that for sure. I would not want to run mine low on lube. Check into removing the plug to see if you get any lube to run out of the hole when the car is level. Some of the other Members may have a better idea. mike...

I don't want to be overly compulsive about little things but I don't want to be foolish either . Am I risking serious damage by just leaving it at 2 plus one additive . The reason i changed it is because of some chatter but now its gone .

Thank you !!!! I guess I will bring it to this really good shop that I have used and have them check it .

I should have brought it to them in the first place but I had the fluid and had a local mechanic do it .When he brought it back he said it seemed a little low .

Mine took the two bottles of GM lube plus the additive and I still needed a couple ounces of lube. Luckily I had another bottle on the shelf. I would add some more if I were you.

Good luck , don't be afraid to crawl under there and give er a go too. You'd be surprised at the savings for a little research!

On my '74, I have crawled under the car from behind to check and top off the diff.

Just get another bottle of diff. oil and another bottle of additive, then measure and add the right amount of each (correct ratio) to top it off. No need to bring it to a shop and pay them. Spend that money on the oil and additive.

You need to add more fluid. Running it low is starving the stub axle bearings and makes it harder for the fluid to circulate.
