I have a set of generic headers, no idea where they came from, but look like Hookers (well, not literally...) and with the aluminum L98 heads, I can no longer remove the driver's rear plug or the passenger side front plug because these heads have angled plugs. You'd have to remove the headers to get to them, or get a special socket or wrench that would fit under those bends.
Found this out last night, so I'm going to peruse the Snap On catalog I just got. Also going to have to go to copper header gaskets too, as there are exhaust leaks at the flange. Nothing that can't be solved by throwing money and time at it!
Just a consideration for your future build-up, whether you go with the aluminum heads on the L48, or go with a crate motor!
Hi MrJlr. Although the pic is from a '69 SB, I'm gonna vote for the Hedman's. As billcarson said, fit was good and access to the plugs isn't a problem.

You can get to those plugs from under the car with a basic wrench 99% of the time.
Thanks diehrd. I'll try that out, because I want to remove those last two, so I can put some anti-seize on the threads to avoid any steel-to-aluminum problems between the spark plugs and the aluminum heads!
No problem ,, that was a question search would have been little help with if any at all.
You can also try sliding the spark plug socket onto the plug and use a wrench on the hex end of the socket to loosen the plug , remove socket and unscrew plug by hand the rest of the way, now that I think about it that's how I have done it several times to avoid the socket binding against the header.
I will be following this thread too. I have a 76 l48 that I would like to put headers on I think. The previous owner put a dual exhaust on got rid of the cats but kept the ram horns. Think I will see much of a difference ? I'm hesitant because I don't weld and without the cats i'm not sure I can find a shop willing to do it for me. Anybody got suggestions?

The curve is so tight, that I can't even get the shortest 5/8 spark plug socket I've got on there by itself! I have a u-joint spark plug socket that I used on two of them (really tight), but those two are going to have to use something else

An open end wrench? That's what I use on my #1 plug....

That methods well on some plugs...used to have to do it on a Camaro I had.....
Thanks, I'll try that tonight, I thought of it, but wasn't sure it'd work. Nice to know someone else went there first!
Beings it's right there by the alternator and power steering pump I don't get much of a turn on it but it's enough to break it loose then I can turn it by hand
