Default T Top center panel

Can somebody tell me how to replace the T Top center panel on my 74.
I bought a new one and not sure how to do it, where to start, or how much work is going to be involved.

The interior part? or the chrome top trim?

Ill assume the interior roof T panel...

Remove the dome light.
Remove the screws above the windshield.
Remove the screws at the rear. I dont remember if it mounts "under" the side panels..if so, remove those too.

Pretty easy really.

74 had no dome light, but I will assume mounting is the same for all, or most, years. I'll try it tomorrow after work.

There are studs on the panel that just push into place.

Purchase the assembly instruction manual (AIM); the AIM shows how the panel was installed on the assembly line. Knowing how it went in helps when taking out the old.

Once you remove all the interior and trim, you need to carefully pry it loose where the attachment posts are located. These plastic parts are very brittle after 40 years, so work slowly and easily when you remove it, so you don't destroy it. I agree that you need a copy of the AIM so you can see how all that interior stuff is attached and how to remove it properly. Also, bag the fasteners for each part and keep them together; otherwise, you will end up with a confusing pile of hardware and wonder how it goes back together.

Good luck!

I have the AIM, looked through it, but did not see it. Where abouts in the manual is it?

Can't quote the specific UPC or sheet page off hand, but I can find it this evening. Trim screws and velcro fasteners for the most part.

Ok, I just spent an hour searching the AIM, twice, and can't find where it shows the install of te T Top Center pad. I found where the inner & outer T Top structure is spot welded together.
Any advice

In my '71 AIM, that is shown in UPC 1, sheet F17. It has 6 screws and the 3 retaining posts (thru the channel section). Prying those posts out of their fasteners is the most difficult part...you don't want to crack the T-panel.

My AIM doesn't have any UPC 1, or sheet F17 ???? Could my 74 AIM be different than the 71?

Cracking the old one doesn't matter, that's why I'm replacing it, lol. I got a new one to put on.

UPC C01-C12 Sheet 16 in my 74 AIM from Mid-America. Numeric page is 149 but that may not be the same numeric page number for you.

All AIMs have the same essential UPC sections in common, but the material in a specific section can vary from model year to model year. Early AIMs grouped options in a section at the rear of the AIM - very handy to flip to and look up. Later AIMs (74 included) incorporate options in the same sections as standard production.

Thanx Mike!
That is a huge help, my AIM is a bad copy, with no index, I should find a good copy.

None of the original GM AIMs had indexes.

I made an index for mine on a thin piece of poster board. I indexed "Body", "Exterior trim", "Interior", etc. etc. with sub categories like "Seats", "Dash", "Console", etc. under the main headings. Listed the page numbers for each entry.
Only took about an hour, but saves me a LOT of time whenever I use the AIM now.

Default Center T-top molding will not snap in place.

I need a little help. I am trying to get the center t-top molding to snap n place. It appears that the connectors in the welded frame are broken. Any suggestions?

Mine also were broken when I replaced mine. I had to drill out an opening (middle one)above where they snap it place. You then can use a small long socket and put a nut on it.
