Default Tach Adapter

When I bought my 74 coupe, the tach cable was broken and there was on old broken 90 degree adapter on the distributor. I just replaced my tach cable and bought a 90 degree adapter, but after I installed it there is alot of up and down play in the adapter,is this normal or is something not fitting correctly?

I've heard the 90* adapters add extra load to the distributor gears and wear them faster. If the distributor is in correctly the cable will nearly fall on without an adapter. No personal experience with an adapter, just passing what I've read. I think Lars has some infor in his papers about them.

No adapters were used at the factory. Correctly index the distributor and an adapter will not be needed.

Throw the adapter in the trash - don't use it. It will cause premature crossgear thrust surface wear due to the additional torque required to drive the 90-degree gear system, which will eventually result in complete failure of the mainshaft and crossgear. The adapter is not needed if the distributor is installed correctly in the GM Service Bulletin recommended alternate clocking orientation - see my paper "How to Install your Distributor" for photos and diagrams on correct installation - e-mail me for a copy.

I also used Lar's paper and suggestion to get my distributor in the right location. By clocking the plug wires over one position it will move the tach cable connection so that the cable fits without a sharp bend in it.
