Default drivers mirror install

So trying to install a new chrome mirror on my 74,theoretically I get it, but how on earth do you get those rubber grometts to fit through the small holes in the backing plate of the mirror and the door skin any advice would be appreciated Cheers Eric

Driver's side does not use the rubber expanding screw plugs. Use screws to screw into the backing plate. Hopefully the threads are still there.
The right side mirror was a dealer installed option and did not have a backing plate for the mount.

Thanks man I should have mentioned that the plate was removed at some point and thats why I was using the passenger side mounting style...well if anybody else has to do this bent needle nose pliers and a lot of dilectric grease...and a good amount of patience works really well its nice and tight and I can now change lanes lol
