Default electrical problem--time for help

I know there are a lot of posts about fuses and electrical systems but after a few months of messing I need to ask about my situation.

I've had a '77 for about a year now and when I bought it the stereo (modern Kenwood CD/USB) was blinking a "protect" message and the clock and courtesy light would work intermittently. After changing some fuses, all worked fine for about 2 days.

So I started going through and checking lines and exposed wires and changed the fuses but nothing worked again. However, the clock would occasionally work for a day or so and then stop. So I've been just planning to go back in and look again.

However, today while driving I noticed the clock working and hit the reset button on the stereo to see if it would also work, and it seemed to come back for about 2 seconds before displaying "protect" again.

So the confusing part to me is that the fuses are still functional but something is still causing the stereo to go into protect mode.

Occasionally while driving or trying to reset the stereo I hear a click that seems to come from behind the instrument panel (but possibly the fuse box) and also when resetting, a quick popping noise comes from one or both of the front speakers. Should the sounds give me any clues about what's going on? I also hear the speaker pop when reconnecting the battery after doing other work.

Thanks for any help.

Complete speculation here but obviously the stereo wasn't wired up correctly. You need to get a wiring diagram for the Vette and one for the stereo and figure out where things went wrong. Most modern stereos require a constant +12V for the memory - could be part of the problem. I think comparing the stereo wiring requirements to the Vette wiring diagram is your best bet to finding the problem.
