I need some help. I have a recently purchased 1973 coupe that I'm about to remove the side pipes from and switch back to a stock exhaust (side pipes sound great but are just too loud for me). Anyway since none of the old exhaust system was in place and I cant seem to find any decent diagrams for the exhaust layout for a 1973 with a 4 speed tramsmission I need some help. I'm questioning the exact location for the center exhaust beacket. Searched the forum and have a better idae where it goes but I'd like to be sure of its proper location. I'm thinking it belongs ontop of the transmission mount (rubber mount sandwiched by steel), and would fit directly between the top metal surface of the transmission mount and the transmission. I'm questioning having the metal exhaust center hanger up against the tranny. If anyone out there has any sort of diagram, picture of other graphic for the center exhaust hanger location (I also would like to confirm the direction the bracket faces) or for that matter the whole exhaust system I'd sure appriciate them posting it, or PM me. Thanks, Russ
On my '73, i'm fairly sure I don't even have/need that bracket. I have (one per side) pipe that runs from the headers all the way back to the mufflers. So I didn't need to have a clamp at that location. Looking at the AIM, which shows it fairly well, the factory used two separate pipes joining at that location requiring the clamps. But, like I said, mine is a single pipe.
Thanks for the reply. I'm using the two separate pipes system. Mostly because I've only got the vehicle up on jack stands. My thinking was not to go with the single pipe because two smaller pipes would be less hassle to manipulate into the proper position (up on jack stands). Either way I will be using the center hanger. I have an assembly manual but I didn't see much on the exhaust. I did not look over the tranny section though. Russ.
Hi Russ,
In the 71 AIM it's shown in UPC 8, Sheet A2 Exhaust System. Probably about the same place in your 73 AIM. It also refers you to the rear engine/trans mount sheet in UPC 6.
With 2 piece pipes you do need the center exhaust hanger and clamps.
Regards,
Alan
Alan, I'll be sure to recheck my assembly manual for exhaust details and FLA-C3 the pictures sure go a long way in showing me the proper exhaust layout. I can see the the center exhaust hanger bracket and the direction it faces. I'm still slightly concerned that Chevy would place the exhaust bracket right up against the tranny witrh out any sort of isolation. But I guess when thinking about things, the tranny is connected to the engine, the exhaust is connected to the engine so how ever the drive line goes so goes the exhaust..... Thanks, Russ

Russ, the white arrow is pointing to the urethane transmission mount.
Purchase the 73 assembly instruction manual (AIM) and follow the diagrams of the factory installation. You're going to want the AIM for more than just stock exhaust.
Thanks Mike, I already have a 1973 assembly manual from Corvette America. Nice to have, I did page through it and I don't recall seeing any details on the exhaust system. I will recheck through. Also (as I posted above) I did not check the Tranny section and this is where the detail will likely be since the exhaust hanger is tied to the tranny mount.
Thanks, Russ
All who pointed out that the assembly manual had the details, yes, as you know you are correct. I must have missed this info while paging through late at night. To those who posted pictures, they were most helpful. Like myself, this thread will help another C3 owner sometime down the road. Thanks again to everyone for your responses, this forum is great. Russ
