I have a 72 coupe. I am having some trouble with the brakes. The car stops ok for regular driving, but i am concerned about it stoping in an emergency. My questions is, if the brakes are working properly shouldn't they lock up and skid if I slam on them? Maybe I am not used to an older car, but I assume that ANY car without antilock brakes should lock up if working properly. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I can't recall ever having locked the brakes on either of my two. I suppose you could. Have you tried it? Find a large, empty parking lot and see what happens.
Actually, you don't want the brakes to lock up because then you have no control. If the brakes don't lock, you can still steer. I have avoided more accidents by steering to avoid it than by skidding to a stop.

I agree that you loose control as the tires skid, but yes! In a panic stop all the wheels will lock.
You need to inspect you braking system and find the fault.

Your assumption is correct.
Just because you can lock them up doesn't mean you should. Heavy braking to prevent this is known as modulation, something antilock systems do for you.
