About sport mirrors...
I have a chance to buy a set of 78 sport mirrors but my 74 has no mounting place on the door panel so my question is if I remove the cables will the mirror stay in a set position or just flop around?
Thanks, Pete.
It will probably flop around. It has to be free enough for the tiny cables and lever to move it, so I wouldn't think it would have enough resistance to stay put on it's own.
With careful measuring you can cut the holes necessary to mount the remote lever in you door panel.

*edit* my bad.
You need the cable on a mirror that was designed to use it..

Tucked inside the door, that could work.
My Vette just turned 39 today (built May 1, 1974).
Just got new door panels so I'm not going to try to make a hole in it.
The mirrors that I have are chrome sport mirrors from advance, had them for several years and
they are starting to flop around.
Advance has black ones that are the same size and shape so the holes will line up but I'm not sure if I can match "Classic White" from a can.
A forum member has 78 sport mirrors in white so I'd like to buy them, and that's why I was wondering about what to do with the cable.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Pete.
The question was about a mirror, not the handle. The mirror itself won't flop around, but the control will be hard to use.
Read my post again. I am saying the mirror will flop around without the cables connected to it. The mirror moves too easily without them. The mirror has to to be able to move freely for the tiny cables and lever to move it.

d'oh. I didn't make the connection.
Sorry about that. Fixed my post.
Don't cut anything. My 74 had sport mirrors on it with the driver's side remote toggle.
Sport mirrors mount with studs over the position of your original chrome mirror. Be aware putting the nuts on the studs inside the door is a real bear. Any 77 and later AIM shows how the mirrors install and how the remote cable routes around the window channel.
Toggle and bezel mount on the interior door panel.

My '76 had at some time sport mirrors installed to make it look like a '77 and newer. It took me a bit to get over the original long chromed pedestal mirror(s) but I have gone back to them.
I could not tell where the donor 'sport mirrors' came from but it was a GM car, maybe a Trans Am... What I did notice is the sport mirror 'pedestal' appeared to shorter that the original chromed pedestal and restricted a bit of the rear view namely showing about 25% of the rear 1/4.
Just my observations regarding sport mirrors, maybe the '77 and newer Corvette mirrors are longer? Never checked.
Oh yes, my remote cable was secured by plastic ties to keep from flopping around and you set the mirror by pressing on the corners. The trim panel was not cut.
It is my understanding Corvette sport mirrors are different from other GM makes (Carmaro/Firebird, etc). Heads are the same but the pedestals are different.
Sport mirrors are shorter overall than chrome mirrors.
Pete,
Watch out when you do this. Several reasons but one of the major reasons is that the mirror will sit lower and make it really hard to see over the 1/4 panel. I have installed this type of mirror in the past...and I can tell you your side view will change due to height reduction.
If you're not following the advice above, it'll blow your mind when you get used to it. I started doing this a few years ago when I bought my first convertible. It kicks ***. No need to look over your shoulder. Hell, I barely even do that when backing up now.

Thanks everyone for the information, some of it made me laugh.
IE: trade the door panels. LOL!
Why would I go from chrome to painted?
For the same reason I bought a Corvette, just for fun!
Looks like the purchase of the 78 sport mirrors is off as I have not heard back from the seller, so I'm going to buy the #1600B and try to find some classic white in a can and spray them. Wish me luck.
Here's a picture of the chrome ones.
Will the white ones look better?
As far as adjusting the mirrors for blind spots, how about behind the sail panels?
