Seeing that it is already to take the body off and I am repainting very soon, what can I do about replacing the eight body mounts???? What about trying to level out the car?

Hey Superman, Not sure what the question is you that you asking. Is it about shimming the mounts when dropping the body back on?

Yeah Clark, It's kind of a confusing question.

I don't know guys, but if I were to take a stab at it I think Clark Kent's alter-ego is saying that he's not planning to lift the body of his car and the question is "Can he replace the body mount bushings otherwise". If so, then I would say "No". If replacing the bushings and shimming the eight body mount locations is the goal, the body has to lift off the chassis.

Yes Baby, you hit it on the nose. That is what I was asking. So your answer is to have to take body off and that is not going to happen at this time period. Also so putting more shims in is also a no go, I take it. Thanks guys

Body mounts can be replaced without a body off. There are many posts documenting the procedure. As far as changing shims, I would ask why you want to do that. If the car is not level it is most likely a suspension issue and not body shims.

So, the OP will walk away from this thread with the wrong info.

You can very easily replace the mounts without taking the body off just do one side at a time. Loosen all the body mount bolts first then remove one side jack that side up about 3” of the frame replace the mounts and reinsert the shims for that mount and then loosely reinsert the bolts then repeat on the other side. Once finished tighten them all up. The body to frame was leveled in the factory so just keep each mount with its original shims. That is exactly what I did. The only problem you may encounter is rusted up mount nuts so really give everything a good soak with penetrating fluid a few days before and if the bolts start to resist being screwed out then screw back in and then out again and keep doing that. My 79 is rust free so the bolts came out clean. If the later occurs then with the bolt unscrewed a bit apply penetrating fluid onto the bolt shaft and let it run into the nut. Be sure if you do this to firstly run the bolt back in and then out to get as much fluid into the nut. Hope this is more helpful to you and yes I did the job in my garage on my own.
