Default Side pipes

Guys,
What is the story behind side pipes? Were they ever installed by the factory? I only like side pipes on a vette , but never knew how to gt them. Who makes them? How much do they cost?

Side pipes have been factory installed item since 1965 on vettes. Most aftermarket suppliers have them, it costs a fair bit of $, you can look them up in the catalogues.

Factory installed side exhaust, was offered in 1965-67, and again in 1969. No other years had factory installed side exhaust.

The 69 style side exhaust system, sells for between $2,500 and $3,000. The side exhaust covers retail for $2,400 a pair, and the pipes are another $500-$700, depending on whether they are steel or stainless.

Only one company makes the correct OEM covers, but all of the Corvette vendors sell them. There are 2 or 3 makers of the pipes, but again, they can be bought from any of the Corvette vendors.

I think side pipes on a vette look amazing and sound great. they might have only came from the factory for a few years, but I think they complete the car. what year vette are you thinking of putting them on??

Not really. 65-67, and 1969 only.

Thinking of putting them on a 72. Do some fit better than others? Is there a brand of preference?

Hi,
I think we're talking about 2 different things here.
The side exhaust that were a pipe and muffler with a chrome plated aluminum cover that was an option on 69 model year cars, and the aftermarket 'Hooker' style side exhaust as shown in Chris NY's avatar.
Very different looks and sounds, for owners with different tastes.
Regards,
Alan

Here's how the factory side pipes look on my 72. There starting to show there age now, after being on my car for well over 30 years.

These were NOS. Bought them over the parts counter at a Chevy dealership way back when...

i love the factory style on MuskieAl's they look perfect. on a 72 thats the way i would go, but of course you can do the hooker side mounts on them as well. many places sell the original style ones.

4300 +/- cars came from the factory in 69 with side exhaust.

These cars all have a totally different rear. The rear quarter panels and rear filler panel dont have the cutouts for the exhaust pipes.

The body also had crude cutouts in the fiberglass in front of the rear tires so the sidepipes would have clearance.

Regardless, these cars sound amaziing with stereo exhaust

guys,
You nailed this one. The look I am after is that of MuskieAl's pictured. The others are cool, but I really like the original style with the perforated heat shields.

GB VETTE... Who is the "One Company" that makes correct OEM covers?

Hi Kevin,
The 69 style exhaust shields on MA's convertible aren't 'perforated', they're solid.
I mention that only because there ARE 'perforated shields' available for the Hooker style side exhaust.
When the word perforated is part of the description most people think Hooker.

Hi NMT,
Paragon Corvette Reproductions is the source of the fiberglass insulators and chrome plated shields that are on the market.

Alan,
That's where I got the side exhaust pipes, and have been buying everything else from, and plan on buying my insulators and shields from. I thought there was some other supplier that had the "correct covers" that GBVETTE mentioned that I wasn't aware of.

Thanks, Ned

Reading this thread has made me want true dual out the back now. I like loud cars but hate the drone of driving one. Maybe if i get a ls3 motor ill look into the low noise side pipes.
