Just installed new cam and intake, had a cup full of water just in #7 and over full oil with water. So I did my mods thinking is was probably just an intake or head gasket. Got it back together and its got a miss. #7 seven plug has water beads and if you tap is in your hand you get a pretty good little drop of water. What do you think?
Should I remove the head and have it magnifluxed, do some sort of visual, pressure or die test. I am hoping it is not a block problem since its prime time for cruising. This is a 71 sbc by the way.
Ouch! My guess is either bad head gasket or cracked head since you're pushing water into the oil pan. Was there anything that happened to the valve train that would have bent a valve which can crack the head? Timing chain/gear maybe? Regardless, I'd pull the intake and then the head. If it's just the gasket then you've got the work done. If the gasket is good then get the head looked at. And take things from there. Sorry to hear about it.
Couple of things. I have used a radiator pressure tester and attach it to the radiator and crank the engine. If the gauge goes up...more than likely a head gasket. If it does not...then it has to be in the head. Either way...pull the head.
Secondly...I am actually worried about the coolant/oil mix that you have now. Be sure that you take the needed steps to get this crap out of the engine. Because the coolant can wipe the coating right off of your bearings. That mix can create many issues with oiling if not taken care of ...just in case you did not know or were aware of it. This is not GOOD due to being a new cam that is needing to be properly "broken-in". For me... the repair procedure due to being a new cam/lifters is different than if it were an old engine with this coolant issue. It will all depend on how badly the coolant and oil mixed...and for how long has it been allowed to mix. If the oil looks like caramel...for me...it is too late....and would require extensive cleaning.
For what it is worth...I have down this road before also and it REALLY STINKS. My issue(s) was/were with the heads and how they had literally rusted away (from the inside) due to the engine was allowed to sit open with no coolant for years and years....along with 305 heads that were put on an engine before it came to me and literally filled the crankcase with a caramel colored grease when the coolant and oil blended. Both were "fun" repairs for my customers.
