Default 1970 side vent trim

A friend is about to paint the side vents (egg crate) on his 70 LT-1. My understanding is that only the horizontal bars are unpainted, revealing the chrome surface. I know there was a running change in 71 where both horizontal and vertical surfaces were chrome in appearance. Is this true? Is the front vertical bar chrome in appearance as well on the 70 ? Any pics would help.

Thanks

Hi CV,
The side grill itself will tell you if it's one that originally was a horizontal exposed chrome edge version or the later horizontal/vertical exposed chrome edge.
The portion of the grill that was exposed chrome on the later grills isn't even on the earlier grills, (not part of the casting); it's not as though the edge was on earlier grills and just not exposed.
On the early grills the upper and lower horizontal bar and the front vertical bar were exposed and formed a horseshoe shaped 'track'.
If you have 2 to compare it's immediately obvious which early is which is late.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan So the Grilles themselves were different. I just got a pretty good picture of a 70 on the Tech Board. My buddy has a real nice LT-1 and didn't want to mess this up. So many of the cars and pics you look at have been changed to suit the owner's taste.

Hi CV,
Yes, there's an additional tiny raised lip on the vertical bars of the later grills that has the chrome surface exposed. The vertical bars on the 70 style grill end in a smooth edge.
Regards,
Alan
