How do I remove the horn button from the steering column. There is suppose to be a lever that activates the telescoping steering column, but I can't find it. could someone tell me what to look for. Of course it may not be there, this car has been worked on over time. Things removed, things added.
I could not find anything in the manuals I have to help me
Thanks
The horn button simply pops off. You just need to pry it off with something soft that won't scratch the paint.
As for the telescoping column, on some diagrams it's called a "lever" on others it's called a "Lock Ring". The Lock Ring has a thumb tab at the top. The Lock Ring is located right behind the horn button. You push the tab in one direction to unlock the column so you can move it in or out. Pushing the tab on the Lock Ring in the other direction locks it. But only if the Lock Ring has been properly set. The Shop Manual for your year of Corvette has a very well written and detailed procedure for setting the Lock Ring tension.
I tore down and rebuilt the steering column in my '80. It was a piece of cake because I had an '80 Shop Manual and the Haynes Manual. The Haynes Manual was useful only because it explained how to separate the column at the tilt pivot. The Shop Manual did not.
If you have a 4 spoke steering wheel (AKA Vega style) then you do not have tele/tilt. If you have a 3 spoke then the tab should be there. Push it to the left to unlock, move the column, and then return tab to right to lock:
