Default CE Block Information Needed

I just bought a 1969 350 that has a CE Block. I'm not familiar with the meaning of the block numbers but here they are. Anyone decode these?

Engine Pad..............CEA130984

Block Casting Date...A 18 1
OR
A /8 1

This are hard to read as usual

The engine was assembled in 1971. That's about all you'll get off a CE pad.

The "CE" stands for Chevrolet Engineering. That block is a standard issue replacement block for an engine warranty problem. There really is no way to trace any information on it. Some dealers stamped additional [dealer] serial numbers along with the CE....most did not.

Even though it was issued by GM for a GM dealer, it does not qualify as a replacement for the original engine block.

Unless there was a major mechanical problem with the original engine, most of the external parts on that CE engine probably came from the factory and were transferred by the dealer in the swap. But, there is also no way to verify that. If the date codes on those parts are appropriate, they were likely original to the car.

Then why were replacement transmissions stamped CT?

No, it's cause CT is for Chevrolet Transmission. Just like CE is for Chevrolet Engine, not Engineering.

Thanks for the explaination. I have a 69 L-46 that has a CE block. I was told, from someone, that CE was Counter Exchange? The others sound more official.

That is a common misconception. Mike has it correct: Chevrolet Engine.

Corvette Myth, but I like it. CE indicates an engine block replaced under warranty. GM tracked warranty replacement blocks (CE) as part of their quality control efforts.

Do the numbers part of CEA130984 do any good as far as sequence as to when it was installed closer to just 1971?

Not really. All you can honestly say is that is could not have been used prior to the casting date. Do you have any documentation with your car? An engine replacement under warranty probably left a paper trail.

I believe the A might mean that it belongs to the second lot of CE engines issued in that year after they exhausted the first series. Beyond the '1' being for 1971, not much is known.

Be aware that CE engines were available as over the counter spares, hence the incorrect 'counter exchange' name in addition to being warranty engines for all Chev products.

I don't have any paperwork but the gas tank looks original and I'm hoping to find the build sheet. The casting date is A 1 8 1
