It depends on how stuck it is from years of being in one place. Some have had luck with hitting it up with a mallet while still in the car. I had to pull mine out and set it up on the ground to get a solid hit on it enough to get it to break loose.
I used a piece of aluminum on the shaft while I hit it so as not to damage the splines. The picture on the right shows the length of the shaft for the old gearbox. It stuck out about 4 1/4" from the barring. It needed to be 1 7/8" for the Boregson box. Once I broke the shaft loose it slipped in/out with just a little tapping.
Mine was easy to collapse... just a little tap with a rubber mallet. In fact, I over collapsed it and had to pull it back out a little while installing a Borgeson steering box.
While I had the steering column out I pulled the lower bearing and re-greased it with some synthetic grease. Easy to get to. Also a good time to replace firewall seal. You can see in the attached pic how they deteriorate.

I would suggest just prying on the lower steering shaft to get it to telescope back into the steering column lower bearing and column jacket.
Hammering on the shaft is not good for the three sets of bearings that support the shaft. You could end up with a steering shaft that feels rough as you rotate it.
