Default 700r4 installation help

I have an 82 CE and the original 27 spline 700r4 finally gave up. I had a later 1989 700R4 from another project in the garage. I dropped the old one installed new seals on the late model 700r4 and installed. When I went to install the crossmember I realized it was 5-1/5 off the transmission mount. It's level just 5-1/4 back too far. Anybody have any solutions. Please keep in mind I'm no welder..

I knew it was going all too smooth.

You should be able to replace the tail shaft housing with the original one.

Is there any difference between the early and late model? I know they are the Same size

I was just thinking about swapping the tail shaft housing. It's already in the car and reinstalling with the drive shaft was a real pain in the a$$. I really don't want to pull out again.

I just realized I'm a complete knucklehead. When I put the tranny back in I had the drive shaft in the tailshaft and I balanced the whole assembly and raised the tranny and driveshaft up into position. Not once did I ever consider unbolting the front of the drive shaft from the front yoke. DUH. Can't believe I did that I was so he'll bent on getting it in the oblivious was right in front of me.

Now of course I can swap the tailshaft and do the job properly.
