Just use a screwdriver type nut driver and snug them up hand tight. Any more and you will distort the sheet metal and have a bigger leak than you had before.

Don't overthink it, they are only valve cover gaskets.
I usually use a Permatex product, like High Tack, and 'glue' the gasket to the Valve cover itself, and clean the hell out of the head side, and the valve cover itself for that matter. Like surgical clean. Then install and torque (like I said, 55 inch pounds). Check them again in a week and re-torque. Don't use any sealant on the head side, that way you can remove and reinstall the valve covers...
Edit: You might want to research the Rubber gaskets, as I do believe they are a bit different. I use Cork with no ill effects...
Good luck, very easy job.

Yes, glue the gasket into the valve cover solid.....grease the head side and replace the cover then naturally bolt it down....by gluing the gasket solid in the cover you cannot dislodge it if you bump a stud or rocker accidently and unseen, thereby a potential leak....that's the way us racers install gaskets, plus enabling for us to use them over and over
